by Abbie Hamilton, George campus student
Day 1/May 27th, 2017
On the agenda for today:
-Bus leaves for the airport at 4:30am from the Terry campus
-Board your flight
-Go through customs
-Meet our ISA guide
-Bus to Tirimbina
-Check in and have dinner
I woke up at 2:30 a.m. and went back to sleep; that was a bad idea because I was rushing to leave the house in order to have enough time to drive to the Terry Campus. Yay! My brother was the one to drive me there.
We were running out of time and made it there 10 minutes early. The majority of the group was already on the bus and I was the last one on. One check mark for Abbie: she caught the bus. My passport took forever to get here and I felt that I would not board the flight because the numbers of the old one got misplaced for the new one and also because I was the only student that was not American in the study abroad class
My green card allowed me to go to Costa Rica...yes! I was cleared and my luggage was sent off. The flight took four and a half hours but we were waiting for the plane to take off for about 30 to 45 minutes. I sat with Cheyanne; I wanted a window seat but I got an aisle seat. Cheyanne and I played Uno and ordered hot chocolate. The flight was amazing. Then after the flight landed we had to head to customs. The line was so long, we waited for an hour and a half and we were asked for our passports.
After that our teacher told us to say no to all the people holding up signs who wanted to carry our bags. I’m not over exaggerating there were a lot of people, it was about 150 people. You had to say no firmly. From that moment we were no longer in the United States. On the tables we passed were confiscated fruits that people tried to bring into the Costa Rica or back to the US.
We were so hungry that Mrs. Krumrine took out her bread and started sharing it with everyone. We made such a mesh and people were looking at us but we didn’t care because we didn’t know any of them. That was a funny moment. Eventually we made it outside and met Miss Melisa our ISA guide. Alex (the bus driver for the entire trip) put our luggage on the bus and from there it was a three to four hour ride to Tirimbina. We checked in and got ourselves settled then had dinner.
*What I learned that day: don’t bring back fruit, how to properly play Uno, and that you can bring snacks in your luggage like cookies, candy, protein bars etc.
